Don’t overlook towing capacity when buying a new van

Towing capacity has become an increasingly important requirement for many businesses across Ireland. From plant hire and construction to landscaping and equipment transport, more operators are regularly towing heavier loads — and choosing the right vehicle specification has never been more important.

With that in mind, Blarney-based Cork Truck Centre (CTC) Mercedes-Benz has shared details of a recent customer upgrade to correctly specify a van for the work it will actually do.

CTC said its customer last year chose a lower-cost competitor van over a Mercedes-Benz Sprinter 317 with the factory uprated 3,500kg towing package. While the vehicle suited the budget, the dealer said it did not suit the application.

“Their business regularly tows equipment close to 3,500kg, while the vehicle purchased is only rated for 2,000kg towing capacity and is built on a front-wheel-drive platform,” said David Ferriter of CTS Mercedes-Benz.

“Not only is the vehicle’s train weight over its plated allowance, the result has been ongoing issues with traction, towing stability, drivetrain strain and driver confidence, particularly in demanding conditions.”

A rear-wheel-drive Sprinter properly specified for heavy towing is engineered specifically for this type of commercial use, offering better traction under load; improved towing stability; greater long-term durability; increased driver confidence;  and lower operational stress on the vehicle.

“Yes, the Sprinter would have represented a higher initial investment but in commercial vehicles, the cheapest option is not always the most cost-effective option over time,” added Ferriter. “The right specification protects your business, your drivers and your long-term operating costs.”
