Knorr-Bremse to roll-out redundant braking system for autonomous trucks

Knorr-Bremse has confirmed plans to begin series production of its redundant braking system for level 4 autonomous commercial vehicles in 2027.

The German manufacturer said its rGSBC redundant braking system is designed to maintain vehicle control if the primary system fails.

Based on the Global Scalable Brake Control (GSBC) platform, it consolidates the previously diverse range of components into a unified brake control platform.

This simplifies system layouts and reduces installation space, weight, and installation costs.

The rGSBC provides wheel-by-wheel brake pressure control on a secondary path, supporting strategies from minimum-risk manoeuvres to continued mission operation.

The braking system is complemented by a redundant steering portfolio covering electric power steering (EPS), a redundant EPS variant, and an electrohydraulic superimposed steering option.

A Steer-by-Brake function adds an independent fallback for vehicle guidance during critical failures.

North America is the primary market, with hub-to-hub freight the leading early application.
