IRHA wants physical toll barriers removed for HGVs

The Irish Road Haulage Association (IRHA) is set to step up its campaign to remove physical barriers from toll booths or allow HGVs to use the express lanes at toll booths.

The IRHA claims that every time a large HGV stops and starts at a toll barrier, it burns up to two-litres of diesel – the equivalent of burning up to 5.08kg of CO2.

IRHA president, Ger Hyland said hauliers are “wasting millions of litres of diesel every year, needlessly”.

“Over 24,264 HGVs pass through our tolls every single day, meaning that we are needlessly generating 28,861 kilos of CO2 every day just by having barriers in place at our toll booths.

“Barriers at toll booths create a cost for hauliers, for the wider transport industry and for the environment. We are campaigning to have barrier free tolling for hauliers,” he added.
