BPW offers trailer maintenance tips

Trailer maintenance is key to keeping your fleet running smoothly and avoiding Vehicle Off Road “VOR “ situations. Axle specialists, BPW Limited recommends these six routine checks to ensure your trailer’s maximum efficiency, safety, and longevity.

Tip 1 Check tyres

Worn tyres can reduce traction by 30-50 per cent. It is good practice not to allow your tread depth to go below 3mm, as tyres can burst on the road, expecially at high speeds.

Tip 2 Grease and Adjust brakes

It’s crucial to check your brake air pipes. Water collected in the brake system can cause the brakes to freeze or split. It is advisable to grease the running gear with the correct grease and adjust the brakes.

Tip 3 Check for Air Leaks

After being outside for a while condensation may accumulate in the vehicle’s air tanks. Ensuring the air system is maintained will keep the ssystem corrosion-free. Listen for any air leaks.

Tip 4 Vehicle & Trailer Body

Regularly wash and clean your trailer, expecially in autumn and winter when the roads are wetter and dirtier. Check the condition of the doors and seals, the roof and the registration plates, to keep the vehicle in good condition.

Tip 5 Check Lights

During your daily walk-around driver checks, make sure all lights are operating correctly. It is essential to check all trailer lighting – front, rear and side markers.
