Matthews Coach Hire wins road safety award

Matthews Coach Hire Ltd has been honoured by the Road Safety Authority (RSA) for its commitment to road safety for the installation of alcohol ignition interlocks in its fleet of coaches. The vehicle’s engine will not start if the driver’s alcohol level exceeds a pre-set safety limit.

Founded in 1995 by Paddy and Mary Matthews, Matthews Coaches is recognised as being a leader in the coach transport industry in Ireland, implementing numerous road safety initiatives. The company won the ‘Business Category 2023 RSA Leading Lights Award’ for its efforts.

Paddy Matthews and Majella Lambe of Matthews Coaches picked up the award at the RSA’s Leading Light in Road Safety Awards in the RDS, Dublin.

An example of these initiatives includes the installation of alcohol ignition interlocks in its fleet of coaches connected to a vehicle’s ignition system and activated by the driver providing a breath sample into the device. The vehicle’s engine will not start if the driver’s alcohol level exceeds a pre-set safety limit.

Matthews Coaches has created a programme that can be replicated by other transport and haulage companies wishing to install Alcohol Interlock programmes. The RSA judges thought this was a good reflection of Action 23 of Phase 1 of the Road Safety Strategy which addresses measures to tackle drink driving.
