Volvo Trucks launches new suspension and steering combination

Volvo Trucks has announced that its independent front suspension system can now be ordered in conjunction with its dynamic steering system for left-hand-drive models.

The development is aimed at the long-haul market, providing stability, precision and control to reduce driver fatigue. Steering is also claimed to be lighter and smoother at low speeds.

The steering system uses a traditional hydraulic system to turn the wheels, but an additional electric motor to either boost or regulate steering movement according the situation. This makes steering easier at low speeds, while compensating for steering irregularities like side winds or potholes.

The front suspension system consists of double wishbones that allow the wheels to move vertically, independently of one another. Cross-members provide lateral stabilisation, while vertical movement is controlled by the air bellows.

The combination of independent front suspension and dynamic steering also reduces vibrations transmitted through the steering column to the driver, resulting in reduced strain on muscles and joints over time.

Kristin Signert, Long Haul Segment Manager for Volvo Trucks, stressed the benefits for drivers. She said, “The independent front suspension gives perfect road-holding and the comfort offered by Volvo Dynamic Steering translates not just into an improved working environment, but also a reduced risk of working injuries for the driver.”

The system is available to order now for left-hand-drive Volvo FH and FH16 models, but no timeframe has been announced for right-hand-drive orders or other models in the range.
