100 Mercedes-Benz hydrogen trucks to be built in Germany

Daimler Truck has confirmed the production of 100 liquid hydrogen-powered Mercedes-Benz NextGenH2 trucks, developed in part with funding from the Federal Ministry of Transport.

According to the manufacturer, each fuel cell truck can achieve a range of well over 1,000km when fully loaded, making it particularly suited for flexible and demanding long‑distance transport.

The Mercedes-Benz NextGenH2 trucks will be manufactured at Daimler Truck’s production site in Woerth am Rhein and gradually rolled out for customer deployment planned from the end of 2026 onwards.

Daimler Truck presented its new Mercedes-Benz NextGenH2 fuel cell truck during a visit of Federal Minister of Transport Patrick Schnieder in Berlin, where he met with Daimler Truck CEO Karin Rådström to discuss the decarbonisation of the transportation sector.

The meeting highlighted the need for close cooperation between industry and policymakers to swiftly advance and scale up technology and infrastructure.

The company pointed to Germany’s extension of toll exemptions for zero-emission trucks until mid-2031 as a positive example, calling for similar implementation across Europe.

The company also highlighted the strategic importance of fuel cell and hydrogen technologies for European competitiveness, noting that a well-established supplier base could reduce dependency on Asian manufacturers and strengthen regional value creation.

Daimler Truck called for clear political frameworks to provide investment certainty and enable market development across the hydrogen value chain.
