Light and heavy commercial vehicle sales increase in 2024

A total of 30,786 new light commercial vehicles (LCV) were registered in 2024, an increase of seven per cent compared to 2023 (28,854), according to figures released today by the Society of the Irish Motor Industry (SIMI).

New heavy commercial vehicle (HGV) registrations enjoyed an increase of eight per cent (2,865) in comparison to 2023 (2,655).

Electric LCV sales fell by just over one per cent in 2024, with 934 sold compared to 944 in 2023. More than 95 per cent of LCVs sold last year were diesel (29,318).

Sales of automatic transmissions increased in 2024, up 12.09 per cent on 2023 to 7,591 with a market share of 24.66 per cent.

Pick-ups also continue to grow in popularity, with sales up almost 10 per cent (1,531) on 2023 (1,397).

Ford once again ended the year as Ireland’s best-selling LCV maker, with 6,588 units sold. Its Transit Custom, Transit van and Ranger pick-up were all amongst the highest sellers last year.

Renault (5,257), Volkswagen (3,462), Opel (2,505) and Toyota (2,498) followed Ford in overall sales.

The Renault Trafic was the most sold new van of 2024 (2,866), followed by the Ford Transit Custom (1,774), Peugeot Partner (1,664), Renault Master (1,538), and Ford Transit (1,527).

Scania (744), Volvo (721), DAF (486), Renault (342) and Mercedes-Benz (321) were the top five best-selling truck makers of 2024.

Elsewhere, bus and minibus sales grew by 76.92 per cent (115) and 171.93 per cent (155) respectively – another indication of a strong economy.

Ambulance sales are up almost 70 per cent (133), which is more welcome news.
