Holyhead Port for partial reopening on January 16

Holyhead port has remained closed to ferry traffic since December 7, when Storm Daragh damaged the berths.

The disruption to trade at the busiest time of the year has been massive. It is estimated that 1,200 trucks make the crossing every day. In addition, an estimated two million passengers use Holyhead each year.

However despite considerable skepticism, it appears that Terminal 5 is estimated to reopen in the middle of this month, albeit subject to weather conditions and the following which could further delay the reopening.

The Holyhead Port Authority statement said: “The safety of our passengers and colleagues remains our top priority. We will continue to prioritise rigorous assessments and repair work to ensure that the berths meet the highest safety standards before reopening.”

Welcoming the announcement, Irish Ferries said: “With clarity now on the situation for the coming weeks, Irish Ferries will continue to review what further route measures are required to ensure the needs of its passenger and freight customers are met.

“With a phased re-opening plan of Holyhead port that involves more limited berth availability, Irish Ferries has agreed a timetable with the other operator that will allow Irish Ferries to operate full schedules into Terminal 5.”
