Schaeffler tie rod/axial ball joint fault diagnosis advice

Fault diagnosis for tie rods and axial ball joints is the subject of the latest technical update issued by Schaeffler’s REPXPERT team.

As well as offering premium quality steering and suspension components via its FAG brand, Schaeffler says it is committed to providing relevant and important technical advice, and the latest guidelines issued by the motion technology company look at common causes of problems in the chassis system.

“Chassis components, including tie rods and axial ball joints, are subject to extreme wear,” said Alistair Mason, technical manager at Schaeffler Automotive Aftermarket (UK) Ltd. “This is then exacerbated by operating conditions and environmental influences, such as extremely poor roads. Technicians need to look out for the tell-tale signs that suggest a problem.”

Starting with a damaged boot, the likely causes include water or salt contamination, as well as material wear due to age. Both will result in premature wear of the ball joint and socket, along with noise during load cycles or when driving on uneven surfaces. Associated bushes and joints can also be affected.

Next up are worn tie rod ends. These can degrade due to the impact of increased forces on the joint, such as curbing or pothole impact. Other factors that can affect this area include impact from debris, such as stone chips, and increasing porosity. All of this wears down the ball and socket joint, leading to the formation of surface rust, corrosion and premature failure.

“The wear of a single component can interfere with other associated chassis components, impairing the driving safety of the entire vehicle leading to a loss of comfort and dynamics,” said Mason. “It is therefore essential to correctly diagnose and replace all affected components.”
