Cavan priest reunited with old DAF 66

A priest from County Cavan has been reunited with his family’s old DAF 66, the small two-door saloon produced by the Dutch firm between 1972 to 1976.

Fr. Martin Gilcreest contacted DAF Trucks Ireland to enquire about bringing the car back to its original family, as his father had purchased the car from new 50 years ago.

Simon Teevan, managing director of DAF Trucks Ireland said: “It was with heavy heart we said goodbye to our DAF 66 this week, but we couldn’t be happier with where it has gone to.

“We were recently contacted by Fr. Martin Gilcreest, whose father bought the car new from Erne Motor Works in Belturbet, Co. Cavan in 1974.

“Fr. Martin asked if he could buy the car back and how could we say no! We’re delighted to have reunited the DAF 66 with its original family.

“Fr. Martin even learnt to drive in the car and we love the picture he shared with us of him in 1984, alongside a picture from this week of him collecting the car. Wishing Fr. Martin many more happy memories in the DAF 66.”
