Harris Group launches new EV training academy

Leading commercial vehicle distributor Harris Group has launched a training academy at the company’s headquarters, which will provide specialised training to electric vehicle (EV) technicians.

The academy was officially opened by Minister of State at the Department of Transport, Hildegarde Naughton.

Keith Mooney, Director of the Training Academy, gave an overview of the initiative and what it will mean for the EV industry. “This is the latest in a series of initiatives that are part of Harris Group’s commitment to innovation and revolution in the commercial transport industry.

A key part of Harris Group’s mission is our commitment to zero-emission technology and building a sustainable future,” he explained.

He added: “We anticipate increased growth in the EV industry this year and beyond, and demand for specialist EV technicians is therefore likely to increase. Training technicians effectively is key to staying ahead of the trend.”

The training academy is led by two training managers, Noel Hughes and Eamon Connolly, both experts in their field. The programme will include a combination of virtual training and face-to-face teaching.

Mooney continued: “Participants can also access live video, pre-recorded sessions and self-learning on the Learning Management System, and can attend the training facilities in Harris Group HQ, which is located on the Naas Road, Dublin.

“The training is modular-based, and all modules combine to complete a three-stage certification: System Technician; Diagnostic Technician; Master Technician. The programme will provide support to all of Harris Group’s dealers in multiple franchises.

“We expect the training will increase technicians’ motivation to engage with the EV industry and have a more favourable attitude to working with EVs. It will also increase efficiency in terms of time and cost savings for their workshops.

“Gone are the days of expensive replacement batteries, we are now in an era where we can repair batteries and components far more cost effectively, ultimately enhancing customer satisfaction.”

Harris Group is furthering its commitment to zero-emission technology with the launch of this Electric Vehicle Technician Training Academy.

In the long term, EV uptake should increase as the customer experience will be improved and costs will be reduced through more efficient repair processes. A huge obstacle to the wider uptake of EVs is the lack of sufficient infrastructure, and this training academy serves to alleviate this issue.
