Onwards and upwards at Condell & Ryan

Condell & Ryan, based on the Mountrath Road in Portlaoise, Co. Laois was acquired by Portlaoise Springs, Ireland’s leading commercial vehicle leaf spring manufacturer and distributor last summer. It’s been onwards and upwards ever since for the busy Motor Factor, John Loughran reports.

When Condell & Ryan Motor Factors came on the market in summer 2020, business partners John Duff and Martin Holohan, saw an opportunity to purchase an established business that had been trading very successfully in the locality for half a century.

John and Martin, better known for their involvement in Portlaoise Springs, saw an opportunity to purchase and build on an existing local business, which specialised exclusively in car parts and broaden the scope of the business to include commercial vehicle parts.

John revealed: “Condell & Ryan had been retailing car parts in the locality for more than 50 years and had a very good reputation. We felt we could maintain and build on that reputation, while adding CV parts to the range.”

The decision to add CV parts to the offering at Condell & Ryan was made on the back of John and Martin’s knowledge of the market, and a perceived gap in the market in the locality for a quality CV parts Motor Factor.

On first inspecting the premises John was struck by the large warehouse at the rear, that was largely unused, and recognised the potential this building had to offer.

Having acquired the business, John and Martin set about a total exterior and interior redesign and refurbishment of the building including the warehouse to the rear. This included new signage, the installation of LED lighting and new racking and shelving.

Staff members David Brennan and Noel Marum, who worked for the previous owners, were joined by David Quinn, who was brought on board to manage the new CV business to form a re-invigorated line-up, which now offers parts for cars, 4x4s, agri machinery, and commercial vehicles.

On the CV front Condell & Ryan now has an extensive stock-holding from leading brands such as Sampa and Volvo and Renault OE filters to name a few, with new brands and product lines being added all the while.

Having added a wide range of CV parts to its product offering, Condell & Ryan is now reaching out to a new audience in its catchment area, that was heretofore untapped.

With David Quinn’s considerable knowledge of the CV market, built up over many years, Condell & Ryan is now actively seeking out new customers in the locality, with a view to building long, lasting relationships.

John is very happy with the progress to date, which has seen many CV parts customers added to Condell & Ryan’s customer base.

Condell & Ryan’s CV parts trade is building all the time and benefitting from positive word-of-mouth testimonials.

However, the team at Condell & Ryan isn’t content to sit on its laurels and is very active on Social Media in promoting the burgeoning business.

John elaborated: “We have a significant presence on Facebook and we use that to promote the business.”

John also recognises the value of more traditional methods of promoting the business, such as tele-sales and customer facing meetings. The latter activity has been curtailed because of COVID 19, but John believes face to face meetings will play an important part in the marketing mix after the Pandemic has passed.

He added: “Telesales is also very important and of course meeting the customer face-to-face is extremely important, especially when it comes to developing business with customers in the CV sector.”

The secret to Motor Factoring is all about having the right part on the shelf at the right price and backing that up with high levels of customer service. It’s a philosophy that isn’t lost on the team at Condell & Ryan, as John explained.

“We have a very extensive stock-holding and a very knowledgeable and friendly team that will pull out all the stops for the customer.”

With new owners at the helm at Condell & Ryan, John and the team are always keen to get feedback on how they are doing. John is acutely aware, feedback can be positive or negative and can shape the future direction of the business.

He added: “The feedback that we are getting from our customers is very positive, and tells us that we are going in the right direction. It’s very important to listen to our customers, and take on board what they are saying.”

With a busy counter trade, two delivery vans on the road, covering a 25 mile radius of Portlaoise, backed up by a network of couriers, Condell & Ryan its perfectly placed to offer its customers a fast, efficient and friendly service.

Condell & Ryan is open Monday to Friday 9.00am to 6.00pm and 9.00am to 1.00pm on Saturdays.
