The latest episode involves a Volkswagen T5 with engine problems such as jerking, running non-concentric and the engine electronics indicator light coming on.
The van’s engine speed sensor, throttle-valve potentiometer, fuel pressure sensor, boost-pressure regulator potentiometer, and exhaust gas recirculation have a common 5 volt reference power supply. The reference voltage in the engine control unit can drop below 5 volt if one of the components should be defective.
TecAlliance says the solution to this is to measure the reference voltage during the test drive. You will need to check the listed sensors and potentiometers as well as their plug-in connections when the reference voltage drops permanently or sporadically below 5 volt.
