The Toyota Proace City has just gone on sale in Ireland, expanding Toyota’s light commercials range. It is priced from €15,038 plus VAT.
Toyota Ireland is offering some launch offers on the new van. A scrappage bonus of €3,000 or a hire purchase rate of 3.9 per cent APR, or alternatively what it describes as competitive leasing offers.
The Proace City enters a very competitive segment with the current market leader, the Peugeot Partner (with an entry-level price of €14,378 plus VAT) followed by the Citroen Berlingo, with the Volkswagen Caddy and Ford Transit Connect, also battling it out at the top of this segment. Others such as the Opel Combo, Renault Kangoo, and Nissan NV 200 compete vigorously for sales in this segment which straddles happily between fleet/utility, small business and owner operator buyers.
They’re two wheelbase lengths to choose from. The short wheelbase (SWB) is 4.4m long with a cargo volume of up to 3.30m3, a standard cargo length of 1.80m, and two individual front seats. For those who need to carry more personnel and cargo, the Smart Cargo feature allows for a three-seat bench with a folding outer passenger seat and a bulkhead hatch which provides an extra 0.4m3 load space, increasing the maximum load length by 1.30m to 3.10m. The centre passenger seatback can also be rotated to create a handy desk space, with additional under-seat storage.
The long wheelbase (LWB) option is 4.7m in length, and its standard cargo length is 2.20m, and cargo volume is 3.90m3. Both cargo length and volume increase to 3.40m and 4.30m3 respectively with the Smart Cargo feature.
The Proace City has a payload capacity of up to 1 tonne and Toyota says that both the long and short wheelbases can accommodate up to two Euro pallets and asymmetric rear doors accommodate loading.
Toyota says that the Proace City benefits from equipment specifications that promote a comfortable driving environment and improved practicality. Where multimedia and connectivity are concerned, Toyota says that Proace City has everything customers need to run their business, and that it can be (so possibly an optional extra) equipped with an eight-inch touchscreen to access audio and smartphone functions, Apple CarPlay (including Siri assistant) and Android Auto (including Google assistant), plus Bluetooth, and USB/Aux-in connections.
Toyota points out that their new van has clever storage points are featured throughout the cabin (depending on which grade, so some are options), ranging from coin and cup holders and open stowage areas, to an under-seat drawer and spaces designed into the doors and floor.
The Proace City is available with a diesel powertrain offering a power spread from 75 to 100hp, and a five-speed manual transmission. Toyota says that it amply covers business and fleet customer requirements in the segment in terms of capability, versatility, performance and efficiency.
The Japanese manufacturer says that ‘Toyota Professional’ offers a comprehensive range of services to keep customers on the road. A spokesman says: “Our dealers are providing more than just commercial vehicles, they’re a partner any business owner can rely on. Toyota Professional supports all aspects of businesses’ needs with a comprehensive range of services and highly trained technicians to keep your business moving.”
Adding: “Toyota Professional includes: ‘Toyota Roadside Assistance’, extended opening hours at some dealerships, our “While you wait” service subject to availability, priority service booking within 48 hours, CVRT test arranged, and where possible, we will provide a replacement van to ensure that you can keep working when your van is in for a service.”
