Manchester will tackle the continued wintery weather with added grit this year after a fleet of new salt-spreaders were christened by a ‘punny’ Twitter poll.
Eight new gritters will hit the Mancunian streets emblazoned with names such as ‘Snowel Gallagher’ and ‘Spreaddie Mercury’, which were suggested by the public.
Around 2,000 suggestions were submitted to its council before being reduced down to 24 of the best and being put to a social media vote.
The eight new vehicles will be named:
- Basil Salty
- Grit Astley
- Gritter Thunberg
- Slushay Away
- Snowbi-Gone Kenobi
- Snowel Gallagher
- Spreaddie Flintoff
- Spreaddie Mercury
The gritters will be used from October to April each year.
