New smart tachographs on the horizon
New regulations come into force in June 15, 2019 that usher in a new generation of smart tachographs.
From that date all trucks registered in the European Union will be fitted with with so-called smart tachographs.
The new devices will have better security mechanisms to make fraud more difficult and reduce the administrative burden, which is expected to save companies €515 million per year.
The new devices will have an interface with satellite navigation systems (GNSS), especially Galileo and EGNOS European GNSS Agency
They will also feature a remote communication facility to communicate the tachograph data to a police enforcer on the roadside when the vehicle is moving, thus avoiding unnecessary stops for checking.
Devices will also have an ITS interface to link the tachograph with other ITS applications.
