Haldex enters test phase for scalable truck braking system

Brake and transmission specialist Haldex has entered a concept phase with an unnamed major truck manufacturer for testing what it calls a ‘scalable braking system’, with a production announcement due later this year.

“We have worked closely with the customer during the [autumn] and have conducted a number of tests where our test results have been far better than the other solutions presented,” said Åke Bengtsson, President and CEO of the Swedish company.

“We therefore, with confidence, look forward to prove this under the concept phase that is now initiated.”

Haldex’s prototype scalable brake systems feature advanced digital vehicle dynamics, using sensors and algorithms to get articulated trucks to handle in the best way possible, using similar technology to ESC systems in cars to help optimise the vehicle’s dynamics, braking and acceleration at each wheel – something that has previously been deemed impossible for articulated vehicles or those towing trailers.

The system will also work with both electronic and pneumatic braking systems and, claims Haldex, has the potential to rewrite vehicle architecture when it comes to the development of future autonomous drive systems.
