Know your bulbs to ensure you maintain your haulage license

According to the Vehicle and Operator Services Agency (VOSA) in the UK, headlamp misalignment is the most common failure for HGV’s during an MOT test – accounting for over 30 per cent of the failure rates.

In recent years technological developments have changed vehicle lighting considerably. Now common on most commercial vehicle trucks and trailers are LED units. Typically found on the rear of the vehicles and trailers, LED units offer an extremely long life, so reducing the need for maintenance and the subsequent costs that are incurred.

With a longer life, there is less chance of LED rear light units failing so helping to improve drivers’ OCRS.

LED units lend themselves to use on the rearm of vehicles. The level of light output needed is lower, so reducing the need for complex integrated systems.

LED units for front lighting, while in development, are far from becoming main stream. There is a more complex technical challenge to overcome. Front lighting requires a higher level of light output for clear visibility and must be directed on to the road to comply with legislation so as to not glare other road users.

While this technology is being developed it will involve complex integrated headlamp units. Insurance premiums will increase to cover the cost for accidental damage, making it currently an unattractive proposition for haulage firms.

The key is for truck drivers and fleet managers to have a source of lighting they can depend on that delivers long life and durability.

Ring’s TruckMaster Heavy Duty Long Life (HDLL) 24v bulbs have been specifically designed to withstand excessive vibrations which trucks and other specialist vehicles are subjected to.

Rough roads, pot holes and the vibrations they cause are a frequent cause of a bulb failure.

The filament is the most important component. It is the source of the light! Its position and size is vital as this determines the accuracy of the beam pattern that is emitted from a light.

TruckMaster HDLL halogen bulbs have been engineered to have a reinforced filament providing extra strength and robustness against vibrations.

TruckMasterHDLL 24v Bulbs are manufactured in Europe to OE (Original Equipment) specification and rigorously tested to standards set by truck and commercial vehicle manufacturers. However Ring also subjects the bulbs to further vibration testing and conforms to IEC60810 European Vibration Standard. The bulbs are mounted on a vibration platform to simulate driving conditions. The test is run continuously with the lights turned on and off.

Being durable is one factor, having a long life is another key requirement for fleet operators. There is a trade-off – Life vs Light output, you can’t have both. The professional sector is looking for a cost effective solution that provides reliability.

Slowing down the rate at which the filament evaporates will increase the life of the bulb. TruckMaster bulbs are not just durable, they offer superb long life. This is achieved through a combination of filament technology and the gas mixture inserted within the glass envelope to a high pressure. This helps reduce the rate of depletion of the tungsten molecules from the filament; increasing life.

With HGV vehicle headlamps becoming more difficult and taking longer to change it makes sense to fit heavy duty long life bulbs.

This improved performance provides substantial cost savings against vehicle downtime and maintenance costs. Overall running costs are improved by simply fitting Ring Automotive TruckMasterHDLL bulbs.
