First all-electric ‘hardcore’ off-road truck

The world’s first purpose-built electric off-road truck has been revealed, aimed at filling on the gap in the market left behind by the Land Rover Defender.

The Bollinger B1 is a brand new ground-up design with no base chassis, and uses aluminium architecture to keep its weight down. It also has perfect 50:50 weight distribution front-to-rear, to aid its off-road abilities and axle articulation.

The vehicle is targeted at utility customers and has a three-tonne towing capacity, as well as class-leading break over, approach and departure angles for extreme off-road applications.

The full-time all-wheel-drive system is powered by an electric motor on each axle, with a combined output of 362 bhp and 640 Nm of torque. This dual-motor set-up is a popular option in long-range electric cars, which feature two motors on the fastest, longest-range models.

Initially, the Bollinger will be built in New York, USA, but the company hasn’t ruled out plans to expand into other markets, while the modular construction of the B1 means it is easily adaptable for right-hand-drive markets.

The production variant of the Bollinger B1 will be offered with two battery options: the 60kWh model will have an estimated range of 120 miles, while the larger 100kWh option will go for 200 miles. This puts it on a par with most existing electric vehicles.

Much like the simple, boxy exterior, the interior has a minimalist design. The use of aluminium continues through the cabin, with “only the necessary controls to operate the vehicle” included.
