Arocs rocks for PJ Gavin Sand & Gravel

Co. Kildare-based sand and gravel suppliers PJ Gavin Sand & Gravel is a company that understands the meaning of heavy-duty haulage.
Founded 40 years ago next year, the company recently became the first Irish firm in its sector to equip its fleet with the new Mercedes-Benz Arocs – a truck that delivers power, robustness and efficiency in equal measure.

Alongside ESB Networks, who have taken delivery of three Arocs units, PJ Gavin Sand & Gravel was first attracted to the heavy-duty features of the Arocs, influenced in part by their trouble-free experience of having operated a Mercedes-Benz Axor unit.

Described by company director Eric Gavin as ‘the talk of the tipper world’, the Arocs has already proven itself to PJ Gavin Sand & Gravel in so many different ways.
Driving into and out of quarries and construction sites all day long, Gavin applauds its ability to operate in the most rugged conditions.

Calling it a ‘go anywhere, purpose-built construction vehicle’ Gavin notes that it is ‘built to handle even the worst conditions in which it might find itself’. Its good lock and turning circle is another feature that he comments upon favourably.

‘Off road, the Arocs goes where you want it to go, with a button that boosts traction to an unbelievable extent’ he said. Attractively liveried in their distinctive green, red and yellow colours, the unit can be seen hauling bulk loads throughout counties Dublin and Kildare

Referring to it as ‘a real head turner’, Gavin jokingly remarks that ‘since we got the Arocs, we cannot get our work done’.
‘Everywhere we go, drivers enquire about it and ask to sit up into the cab’.
Noting that, compared to other trucks, the Arocs has a high cab and an elevated driving position, Gavin speaks positively about the benefit these features bring in terms of all-round visibility and safety.
Looking ahead, he comments that ‘if the Arocs turns out to be as good as the Axor that we had, it would not be difficult to imagine that, over time, we will graduate towards a full Mercedes-Benz fleet’.
