NFT Distribution fits JOST low maintenance fifth wheels

Chilled food logistics business NFT has factory fitted JOST’s lube-free fifth wheel on 65 of its Volvo units to boost safety and reduce emissions.

JOST’s low-maintenance wheel reduces the empty weight of each vehicle, minimising emissions and accumulating significant savings for a fleet that operates 365 days a year.

The more efficient operation is also aided by a reduction in total food miles by maximising a vehicle’s payload.

In specifying the fifth wheel for its fleet, NFT needed a solution that would eliminate grease build-up on catwalks and service connectors for improved safety and vehicle appearance, as well as making the task of coupling and uncoupling trailers cleaner for the drivers.

Dave Seaton, Fleet Engineer for NFT, said, “We were looking for a lube-free fifth wheel to specify on the latest batch of vehicles and so we set up a meeting with local JOST Sales Manager, Jannine Burt. She explained the advantages of the JOST product, which fit the bill precisely. We had a trial unit which we ran for six months – a little over 150,000km – which performed faultlessly. So the decision to specify the product was a no-brainer.”

Jannine Burt explains, “While the top plate liners provide a lube-free connection, it is still essential that the lock jaw is properly lubricated to ensure reliable locking of the king-pin. This task is performed by the ‘LubeTronic 1 Point’ system which provides fully automated lubrication, ensuring that only minimal grease is used in combination with the special coating on the lock jaw. This system ensures that the lock jaw performs reliably without the need for driver intervention.”
