Schaeffler gives CV OE parts warning

A leading manufacturer of original equipment (OE) parts is warning customers to be on their guard when buying commercial vehicle (CV) parts.

Schaeffler-Neil_Bailey-copy1Schaeffler Automotive Aftermarket (UK) Ltd – the leading supplier of OE LuK clutches, INA tensioners and FAG wheel bearings – says a growing trend towards customers buying on price is leading to some serious quality issues with some parts available in the commercial vehicle market being not only of low quality, but in some cases illegal.

Neil Bailey, Business Development Manager – CV, Schaeffler Automotive Aftermarket (UK) Ltd, said: “More and more people are buying on price. They ask for a part for a certain application and they get quoted a price, they don’t know what warranty they are getting or what the quality of product is like.

“Copies of safety critical items like our OE FAG Hub repair insert units are now being offered by several competitors and on first sight they look similar and appear to use the same technology as the FAG RIU, but in fact they are merely standard insert units with many disadvantages.

Schaeffler-FAG_RIU_4254-copy“Recently I found a motor factor stocking and selling four different copy versions of our DAF FAG RIUs that had been imported from Asia and were of an extremely low quality. They had no logo on the bearing, but they were marked with an FAG reference. These items are obviously illegal as FAG owns the patent on the design and technology.

“The customer had to dispose of 50 bearings as he was unaware of the patent on the product and had also been misled about the quality. They had been bought for around 25 percent of the true OE aftermarket value.”

FAG has outlined the differences between its genuine Repair Insert Unit and other ‘insert units’ available from competitors.

Insert Unit

Pre-greased in the factory

– Correct grease specification

– Correct grease quantity

– Grease loss over time

– Contamination can lead to impairment of the rolling contact plus damage to rolling elements and race track

Pre-sealed in the factory

– Seals are mounted error-free in the factory

– Protection against ingress of moisture or solids

Loose attached seals

– Assembly of seals is tricky and requires a mounting tool

– Dirt and moisture ingress

Pre-assembled in the factory

– Minimization of mounting errors

– Quick and simple installation

Assembly during repair

– Several single components can cause assembly errors

– The need to grease, seal and assemble prolongs the installation time

RIU = maximum lifetime

IU = reduced lifetime
