TomTom fleet management tool can save operators £50,000 in fuel

Barnes Coaches in England expects to save £50,000 (which would be close to €66,000) in fuel costs by using TomTom’s fleet management technology to improve driver performance.

The Swindon-based travel operator is using performance monitoring tools to encourage a safer, more efficient driving style and reduce idling time by 15%.

These benefits and savings are in addition to a £10,000 reduction in insurance premiums after the company’s insurance broker, Giles Insurance’s Steve Price, recognised the TomTom system as a tool that would significantly reduce road risk.

“By taking greater control of driver behaviour, we have been able to unlock instant savings; such as cutting our fuel bills, reducing risk and boosting productivity,” said Matt Barnes, Director of Barnes Coaches.

“Our drivers have been receptive to the system and have been keen to work with us to improve their own performance. We are able to provide regular feedback using the wealth of data provided by the system, empowering them to drive greener and safer.”

Barnes has introduced TomTom technology, including the LINK tracking unit and ecoPLUS, to 35 vehicles across its coach fleet. The system provides monthly reports on mpg, idling time, and harsh braking and steering, allowing the development of league tables and performance profiles for their drivers.

Using the TomTom system has also improved productivity and customer service. Real-time visibility of vehicle location means Barnes can identify the most appropriate driver for each job and provide customers with accurate times of arrival.

“When implemented correctly and with the cooperation of drivers, fleet management technology acts as a powerful tool for delivering improved efficiencies across a business,” added Giles Margerison, Director UK & Ireland of TomTom Business Solutions.

“Barnes has successfully demonstrated the benefits of its system to the drivers, allowing them to work together to deliver major cost savings, which will mean a more prosperous future for the company and its employees.
